In New York City, an underground society of supernatural beings exists, hidden among everyday humans. They don’t know of our activities or any of our secrets.

The districts of the Works are made up of vampires, wolves, shifters, witches, and I’m in the fifth and arguably most important district, the Patchwork. My father is the leader of our group, and he oversees all of the other factions.

As his only daughter, that makes me the princess of it all. Cool, right? Actually…no.
Sure, I live in a mansion and money isn’t an object, but that doesn’t matter because I can’t leave. I have a guard who follows me around 24/7. My father and three older brothers treat me like I’m a fragile piece of glass, never allowed to take an independent step or make any decisions on my own.
It’s beyond frustrating—especially since my father essentially runs my life.
He says what I do, when I do it, how I do it, and all that jazz. He tests his formulas and new techniques on me. I’m a walking science experiment.
I hate it.
I hate my life here.

But then he comes along: Killian.
He’s just some vampire…or so I thought.

But you’ll have to read my story to find out what I mean. To know my secrets.
Until then, though, allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Rebekah von Stein.
And I’m a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein.

Welcome to the Works.

  • Fresh look at all the beasties!

Paranormal is my go to first love of Romance books so add in a super hot Hockey Romance writer and I'm on it! Thrilled to see Toni Aleo venture out to a new genre. And hold on because she NAILS this! I love books that give me all the beasties. In Pieces we see Shifters, Vampires, Witches, Frankenstein's descendants and Wolves. There is mention of humans but we don't come across any in this story. After getting the lay of the world, I really felt this was almost dystopian in nature. Things have evolved over time. The supernatural is living among the humans but still keep to themselves. Each faction has a leader, but Rebekah's father is the ruler over all. And he has secrets running miles deep! So many secrets in this book, in fact, I can't share much more with you. Rebekah, despite being pieced together, is a typical young adult--, rebellious, prone to swoon, emotional, trying to be independent. Her heart has been broken but she is trying to live her life as best as her overprotective brother's will allow. The secondary characters absolutely made this book--the prisoners, the brothers. ex-boyfriends, Rebekah's uncle--all made for a very rich story. Killian is also a mystery. The banter between he and Becca is so flirty. The two of them are connected at the soul level. I sense a change coming in the WORKS and these two are going to be the catalyst. Fantastic start for a new series. LOVE what Toni is doing int he paranormal world! Bring me more!!!

  • Pieces (Patchworks #1) by T. Aleo

I love to read sports romances and PNR/Urban Fantasy. So when I found out that Toni Aleo, one of my favorite hockey romance authors, was going to write her first PNR, I was thrilled. I was also not disappointed. Pieces had a different feel than her other books, but it was just as spectacular as her previous work. The story takes place in contemporary New York. There is a secret supernatural community called the Works that is made up of five species: vampires, wolves, shifters, witches, and the patchworks. The Works and Patchworks are both headed by our heroine, Rebecca von Stein’s, father, William von Stein. William’s claim to fame was discovering immortality. Rebecca is the youngest of four children and the only daughter. To say she is overprotected and smothered is an understatement. My heart went out to poor Rebecca whose life is essentially being part of a continual and painful science experiment. To top things off, she becomes a target to those opposed to her father. The plot was amazing. I like that the main character is a descendent of Doctor Frankenstein. That was a clever take that I have never come across before in a paranormal novel. The story is full of supernatural politics and conspiracy. There are numerous unexpected twists that kept me mesmerized. T. Aleo does an incredible job with her character development. I love Rebecca. She just wants to be normal, and her life is anything but that. She is compassionate and clever. I enjoyed Killian’s character. He is mysterious and brave. I cannot wait to see how the two progress in the next book. I read a lot. Sometimes I feel like I'm rereading the same thing. Pieces felt refreshing and new. So if you enjoy paranormal/urban fantasy, and are looking for something different, go no further. You will definitely want to check out this book. I am highly anticipating book two. • Unique!

Rebekah is the daughter of one of Frakenstein's descendents, william and a human mother. William has created a formula to transform him, his brother and their offspring into immortals, except for Rebekah. The formula does not work on her and her body is dying. Willam has been keeping her alive by giving her new body parts. Her family has her locked away from the world until they can find a new formula to make her immortal. Throw in the love of a shifter that is forbidden and other shifters wanting to kidnap her for the formula and you get quite a creative story of forbidden love. Pieces is a very different take on Frakenstein and his descendants. This story was strange, slightly disturbing and kinda fascinating. This is book 1, so there is more to the story but there is no huge cliffhanger. There is lot of unanswered questions, however, and I'm curious where book 2 will take this story. ***ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review***
